Musical Inspiration: Shock to Your System

As much as musical inspiration often lifts the spirits sometimes it accents a tough situation and makes you feel it a little bit stronger, in this case so that you can have a serious conversation with yourself to realize what you really are. What you are is lonely. Firstly I’d like to itterate that this Heartthrob album is on the top of my list of the most repeated right now. Tegan and Sara have evolved throughout the years and it has resulted in this amazing series of beautiful music. This song in particular though has struck a chord in me. Whatever I am going through right now this is exactly what I need.

This song for me sounds like a personal conversation with oneself about how you realize exactly how you’re feeling when something tough has happened (particularily being separated from the one you love), and that this has been tough, and that it is entirely okay to be feeling this way. That shock to your system has effected you tremendously but you will get over it because you realize now how you feel and can face it head on. What you are is lonely. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Now time to figure out how to heal better and at your own pace.

Get out and live your life.

You seem like you’re so restless, young at heart

Who gave you reason?

You should be out driving people wild

Who gave you reason?

You got a shock to your system

Knocked your heart right out of sync

You’re only meant to hurt once in a while

Who gave you reason?

You’re only meant to cry once in a while

Who gave you reason?

You got a shock to your system

Pull yourself out of it

I know that shock to your system

Knocked your heart right out of sync

What you are
What you are
What you are
What you are

What you are is lonely
What you are
What you are is lonely
What you are

You must rely on love once in a while

To give you reason

You must rely on me once in a while

To give you reason

You got a shock to your system

Pull yourself out of it

I know that shock to your system

Knocked your heart right out of sync

What you are
What you are
What you are
What you are

What you are is lonely
What you are
What you are is lonely
What you are

What you are is lonely
What you are is lonely
What you are is lonely

This is absolutely darling! It just makes me want late summer/early fall to be here even sooner!

Canada Day In Ottawa

Every year on Canada day you dress up in your red and white you go out and do whatever with your day and watch some fireworks in the end. Canada Day throughout my childhood was always fun but never extravagant… until this year that is. Living in Ottawa really gives you a small city feel in a big place. Well until you get days like Canada Day where the streets are lined with people in Canadian colours cheering and shouting and being ridiculous. Vendors are handing out free stuff, buskers and entertaining the public and everyone else is out enjoying the day mingling with people they would never have considered talking to while passing by on a regular Sunday. It’s busy, it’s bustling and the downtown core is filled with an amazing energy that can only come from people enjoying a common event.

145 years later here we all were in the capital of our great nation and boy do they like to put on a show. First it was the snow birds, then the open air concert on parliament hill and finally the fireworks show followed by a friendly o’canada anthem rendition by my friends and I. The day being packed with activities downtown and around the world (EUROCUP FINALS 2012 – congrats Spain) it was hard not to feel full of life and happiness walking the streets with everyone. It is really days like this that make you realize that we are a part of a collective, but a collective that cares about our nation and the people in it. That and the fact that Canadians do know how to party.

Outfits That Inspire

My favourite part about this outfit is probably the black stockings. I’m so excited for that style of fall fashion to come back when it’s acceptable to wear stockings with your skirts and shorts.

Big Jet Plane

There is something absolutely methodic about this song. This song feels like sitting on the grass in the sun dreaming of all the wonderful things in life. The remix version makes it upbeat and danceable but the original gives it the nostalgic vibe true in some particular songs. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing or where you are but you can think of one of your happiest or truest moments when listening to a song like this.

These two have terrific voices and I’m definitely going to be exploring them much more.

The Game

You know what I am not exactly a soccer fan. I have always thought it was a stupid sport and a little bit silly with all the dramatic arts that the players portray on the field. “OWW MY KNEE” and such. My observation from the day is true for almost any game that you happen to sit down and watch with a group of motivated people.

Firstly motivation and excitement breeds more excitement. That part is clear. So it doesn’t matter if you happened into that bar this afternoon to just have a snack or to meet someone you will be engrossed by the Portugal vs Spain soccer game just because every around you is. You can’t help but notice what everyone else is noticing.

The best part of this experience is that you do get into it and it does give you such a life high. You know the jumping every time someone misses a goal or hugging the person next to you when they score or listening to the entire bar cheering for one team or the other. Inspiring how sports can bring people together from far away.

Feel It In My Bones

This is one of those songs that you can listen to at any time of year and be able to love over and over again. Permanent repeat!

~ What rushes into my heart and my skull I can’t control
Think about it, feel it in my bones
What rushes into my heart and my skull I can’t control

I feel you in my bones
You’re knocking on my windows
You’re slowly letting me go
And I know this feeling oh-so
This feeling in my bones
